CBD wastewater pipeline installation begins
19 June 2012
Work began this week on the installation of a new wastewater pipeline in Whakatane’s CBD area.
The work will involve the laying of a new 180mm pressurised wastewater main from the southern end of George Street, along Kakahoroa Drive to the existing wastewater pump station at the northern end of McAlister Street.
Whakatane District Council Manager Utilities, Santha Agas says the new pipeline will address overflows that have occurred as a result of stormwater entering the wastewater system during severe wet weather events in the CBD area. “The new pressurised pipework provides a dedicated line for all upper catchment flows from the Hillcrest/Mokorua area to the McAlister Street pump station.
“The majority of the new 930metre-long pipe will be installed using trenchless methods,” Mr Agas explains. “That will avoid the need for lengthy trenches, meaning minimal disturbance to traffic and residents.”
The gravity pipeline currently servicing the Hillcrest/Mokorua, CBD and Mataatua areas will continue to operate. The works is expected to take eight weeks to complete.
