WDC Preparing for Extreme Weather

Friday 2 March 2012, 2pm

Severe weather predicted for Bay of Plenty

Bay of Plenty residents are warned to prepare for the severe weather conditions expected in the next 24 hours.

Destructive winds of up to 120 kilometres per hour are predicted by MetService, as well as heavy rain in some areas.

Residents are urged to take the following precautions now, before the inclement weather arrives:

• Ensure household spouting is cleared of debris, and clear blocked drainage and stormwater grates.

• Secure loose outdoor items such as rubbish bins, garden furniture, trampolines and pot plants.

• Bring pets indoors.

• Limit non-essential travel, but if you must be on the road, check the New Zealand Transport Agency website (www.nzta.govt.nz) or call 0800 444 449 for the latest information on road conditions.

Bay of Plenty Harbourmasters remind people to check moorings and moored boats. It is important to ensure that their mooring headlines are not chafing and that mooring attachment points are strong enough to withstand the winds of more than 55 knots.

The Bay of Plenty Civil Defence Emergency Management Group will monitor the situation and assist local emergency management authorities if necessary.

In life-threatening situations, please call 111 for assistance.
