Variation 6 – Coastal Hazards
As more people develop property in coastal areas, the careful management of our coast becomes increasingly important. Climate change may increase the number of people and properties potentially at risk from coastal hazards over time.
The Council has identified areas of land in the Whakatane District where coastal erosion is happening and where it is predicted to happen by 2060 and 2100, taking into account rising sea levels.
The Council has prepared a variation to the Proposed Whakatane District Plan – Variation 6 - to plan for and manage these coastal hazards. It also includes a variation to the Opotiki District Plan for properties on Wainui, Burke and Paparoa Roads that used to be part of the Opotiki District.
Decisions on the submissions was released in January 2009
