Community Grants

Partnering with our Community

The Whakatane District Council recognises that local communities, through their diverse range of activities, make a major contribution to the social, environmental, cultural and economic well-being of the Whakatane District.

In order to help these communities to make this contribution, the Whakatane District Council has a variety of funding schemes available to community groups, voluntary organisations and in some cases individuals. The purpose of these schemes is to support groups and individuals to meet local needs and increase participation in local activities.

The Council is also responsible for administering a number of grants made available to the community from other organisations, including SPARC (Sport and Recreation NZ) and Creative New Zealand.

TrustPower Community Awards

The Whakatane District Council are delighted to join with TrustPower to support the TrustPower Community Awards.

Rural Playground Scheme

The Rural Playground Scheme contributes towards the provision of playground equipment for the development of playgrounds in communities where the Council does not have available reserve land.

Loan Guarantor Scheme

The Council may act as a loan guarantor for community organisations, groups or bodies where it will provide social benefits to the community of the Whakatane District and where it will help to facilitate financial independence by that group or organisation.

Sport NZ Rural Travel Fund

The Rural Travel Fund helps rural sports and school teams with young people between five and 19 with transport costs to participate in their regular sports competitions.

Creative Communities - Whakatane Scheme

The Creative Communities Whakatane Scheme is aimed at increasing participation in the arts at a local level and at increasing the range and diversity of arts available to communities.

Whakatane Community Board Fund

The Whakatane Community Board Discretionary Fund provides financial assistance for local initiatives that benefit the communities within that Community Board area.

Taneatua Community Board Fund

The Taneatua Community Board Discretionary Fund provides financial assistance for local initiatives that benefit the communities within that Community Board area.

Ohope Beach Community Board Fund

The Ohope Beach Community Board Discretionary Fund provides financial assistance for local initiatives that benefit the communities within the Ohope Community Board area.

Murupara Community Board Fund

The Murupara Community Board Discretionary Fund provides financial assistance for local initiatives that benefit the communities within that Community Board area.

Rates Relief

Rates relief is provided to certain community groups and organisations in accordance with Schedule 1 of the Local Government Rating Act 2002.

Rangitaiki Community Board Fund

The Rangitaiki Community Board Discretionary Fund provides financial assistance for local initiatives that benefit the communities within that Community Board area.

Iwi Liason Committee Discretionary Fund

The Iwi Liaison Committee Discretionary Fund provides financial assistance to support, promote, encourage and celebrate Maori culture and language in the Whakatane District.

Annual Grants

Annual grants provide financial assistance to community based non profit organisations providing a service to the general public of the Whakatane District.
