BE PREPARED FOR THE LONG WEEKEND
Diane Turner, Controller, Eastern Bay of Plenty, said that the weather forecast for the weekend predicted heavy rainfall on Sunday, 6 June 2010. “On Sunday a large trough of low pressure is expected to move onto the country. The front will bring bursts of heavy rain to many places including the Bay of Plenty. Emergency staff are on standby in case the heavy rainfall predicted causes further flooding.”
Ms Turner noted that the MetService had reported that this is likely to be a significant event for the country. People, especially travellers over the long weekend, are advised to keep up to date with the latest forecasts.
Ms Turner said the message to residents was to Be Prepared. “The Civil Defence emergency information “Get Ready Get Through” on the back inside cover of the phone book was a good source of information and information was also available on the Council’s website.”
Ms Turner said if people were in a life threatening situation they needed to dial 111
• If houses are flooded dial 111 and ask for the Fire Service
• If people need to be evacuated dial 111 and ask for the Police
• To report road closures, conditions, slips, stormwater and sewerage problems dial the Council on 3060500
• To find the location of welfare centres dial the Council on 3060500
Ms Turner said that residents should listen to Radio 1XX for updates, stay at home, stay off the roads and look after their neighbours.
