Young Achievers Award
The Young Achiever Awards recognise high achieving sportspeople and students in the Whakatane District.
Nominations are called for each year for students who, in the previous 14 months between 1 July and 30 September, have attained national or international recognition in their sporting or academic achievements, or have won an event while representing the Bay of Plenty.
A sub-committee considers each nomination and makes their decisions based on set criteria.
The Awards were introduced by ex-Mayor Rex Morpeth during his term of office.

Awards ceremony
All successful candidates are invited to a public ceremony hosted by the Mayor at a school in the district, where each student is presented with a certificate noting their achievements.
Usually about 150 to 200 students qualify for an award each year. Parents, grandparents and teachers are also invited to attend. The host school provides a guest speaker and entertainment as part of the ceremony, and afternoon tea afterwards.
