Young Achievers Award

The Young Achiever Awards are held in conjunction with the Whakatane District Council and the Rotary Clubs of Whakatane and Whakatane West.  They recognise high achieving sports people and students in the Whakatane District.

Nominations are called for each year for students who, in the previous 12 months between 1 October and 30 September, have attained national or international recognition in their sporting or academic achievements, or have won an event while representing the Bay of Plenty.

A sub-committee considers each nomination and makes their decisions based on set criteria.

The Awards were introduced by ex-Mayor Rex Morpeth during his term of office.

Awards ceremony

The Awards Ceremony was held at the Liberty Centre, Wairaka Road Whakatane on Friday 2 November 2012 commencing at 12.30 pm.  Afternoon tea was provided at the conclusion of the event.

All successful candidates are invited to a public ceremony hosted by the Mayor  and the Rotary Clubs of Whakatane and Whakatane West, where each student is presented with a certificate noting their achievements.

166 students qualified for an award this year. Parents, grandparents and teachers are also invited to attend. The sponsor provides a  guest speaker who offers encouragement and support to the recipients. This year Mountain Biking Olympian Karen Hanlen told of her journey and encouraged the students to keep dreaming the dream.
