Animal Control

Whakatane District Council’s Animal Control is responsible for ensuring that animals are looked after in a humane manner and are not menacing or a nuisance to the public.

Total confidentiality is guaranteed when contacting the Council and reporting a complaint.

There are Call Centres in Whakatane District Council and in Murupara.

The Council’s Animal Control Unit operates a 24 hour, 7 days a week service.

We will respond to call outs on just about anything associated with control of dogs and animals, especially attacks or threatening behaviour from dogs and roaming stock where we will respond as quickly as possible to eliminate the risk.

Adopt a Dog

Of the 700 dogs impounded annually approximately half are euthanased. Dog adoption is a way to re-home suitable dogs to responsible owners.

Whakatane District Council impounds over 700 dogs from across the district every year. Where possible dogs are returned to their owner or re-homed.

Dog Ownership Responsibilities

The Dog Control Act 1996 in conjunction with the Council’s Dog Control Bylaw 2008 requires dog owners to be responsible in a number of ways.

Dog Exercise Areas

The Council has an obligation under the Dog Control Act 1996 to have regard to the exercise and recreational needs of dogs and to minimise danger, distress and nuisance to the community.

Animal Complaints

The Council responds on average to approximately 200 complaints annually and covers issues such as roaming, wandering, noise, odour, welfare and dairy herds and stock movement problems.
