Young Achiever Awards
The Young Achiever Awards were introduced by ex-Mayor Rex Morpeth during his term of office to recognise the high level of achievement by many of the students within the Whakatane District.
Nominations for awards are called for each year in July for students who in the previous 12 months have attained national or international recognition in their sporting or academic achievements or have won an event while representing the Bay of Plenty.
A sub-committee considers each nomination and, based on the criteria, either approves or declines the application. For a copy of the nomination form Click here. Nominations close on Friday, 3 August 2007.
All successful candidates are invited to a public ceremony hosted by the Mayor at one of the High Schools or Intermediate Schools within the district, where each student is presented with a certificate noting their achievements.
This year the ceremony will be held on Thursday, 13 September 2007 at Edgecumbe College starting at 12.30 pm.
Usually about 150-200 students qualify for an award each year. Parents, grandparents and teachers are also invited to attend. The host school provides a guest speaker and entertainment as part of the ceremony and afternoon tea afterwards.
