Whakatane River Access Improvement Project

Whakatane District Council is investigating ways to improve harbour entrance and navigation across the Whakatane River bar.

Issues with navigation through the Whakatane River entrance date back to the 1970's and efforts to find a long-term solution have been hampered by a lack of reliable field data and limitations of the approaches adopted.

The Council has engaged DHI to undertake a study of the harbour entrance. The study will take a broader view of the issues and consider solutions which take into account environmental, community and cultural constraints which are unique to the river mouth.
