Waimea Stream

Aerial photo of the Waimea Stream project works areaHydraulic modeling of the Waimea Stream indicates that the capacity of the heavily modified watercourse varies along its length, but is generally less than the design 100 year flow.

There are six culverts between the railway and the lagoon, being Railway, Pakeha Street, Division Street, Clarke Street, a private residential culvert and Arawa Street. There are numerous other footbridges, driveway crossings, fences and other structures in the stream channel that obstruct the flow and affect flood risk to neighbouring properties.

The capacity of all the culverts was significantly less than the 100 year flow. To convey this flow without surcharging, each of these structures has been replaced with a new culvert of sufficient capacity to convey the design flows.

This project has been completed.
