Greenwaste
Greenwaste collection service is available to urban households in Whakatane, Ohope, Taneatua, Te Teko, Edgecumbe, Matata and Murupara and is collected fortnightly on the same day as your other household waste is collected. Greenwaste is collected using a 240 litre bin.
What is Greenwaste?
Greenwaste is plant and vegetable waste from the garden, such as:
- vegetable trimmings
- leaves (no flax, as it cannot be shredded)
- grass/lawn clippings
- soft pruning
- hedge trimmings
- weeds
- old plants
These are 'wastes' which nature can recycle into compost and which can be used in the garden and landscaped areas. A good way to remember what should not go into your greenwaste bin is by remembering the slogan:
IF IT DOES NOT GROW – IT’S A NO!
There could be occasions when a greenwaste bin will not be emptied and the reasons for this are based around the limitations of the truck collecting the greenwaste. Bins cannot be emptied if:
- the bin is too heavy (80kg maximum)
- if contents are mixed with soil, dirt, bricks, clay or concrete
- the bin is not an official receptacle
- the bin lid is not closed properly
- the bin is placed beside obstructions, e.g. power poles or trees
- the bin is not positioned properly, e.g. facing the wrong way
- toxic, hazardous or liquid waste is placed in the bin.
If, for any of these reasons, your bin is not emptied, the Council's contractor Waste Management Ltd will leave a sticker on the bin indicating why the bin was not emptied.
When is my Greenwaste collected?
Greenwaste is collected fortnightly. Place your greenwaste bin on the kerb with the rest of your rubbish and recycling just before 7:30am on your designated rubbish collection day. To find out when your collection day is visit the Waste Collection Days page.
