Inorganic Rubbish Collection

Inorganic rubbish must be placed in a tidy pile on the grass verge outside your property before the collection date. Some inorganic rubbish may not be collected till the day after your collection date depending on the amount of rubbish to be collected.

Check the schedule for your collection date.

Any items not collected (because they don’t meet the criteria) will be marked accordingly and are the responsibility of the resident and must be removed. Failure to remove items will be deemed to be littering and you will be charged for the removal costs.

You can put out a pile of inorganic material that is no more than 2 metres long by 1 metre wide by 1 metre high.

We WILL collect:

  • Furniture (chairs, tables, cabinets, mattresses etc)
  • Lawn mowers
  • Carpet
  • Metal items from household renovations (corrugated iron, pipes etc) up to 2 metres long
  • Appliances (washing machines, stoves, fridges etc) but only if they can be lifted by two people
  • Cardboard

We WON’T collect:

  • Any bagged rubbish
  • Computers and TV’s
  • Garden waste, tree trimmings 
  • Commercial and farm waste
  • Silage plastic
  • Bricks and concrete
  • Glass (windows and windscreens)
  • Oil, paint and chemicals
  • Fibrolite and asbestos
  • Car bodies, engines and tyres
  • Builders waste
  • Timber (treated or untreated)
  • Batteries and gas cylinders
  • Wire of any description
  • Anything that cannot be lifted by two people

Q. What is inorganic?
A. Anything in the “we WILL collect” list.

Q. How much can I put out?
A. A tidy pile of material no more than 2 m long by 1 m wide by 1 m high,  so long as any one item can be lifted by 2 people.

Q. What happens if I put my rubbish out late or someone else puts rubbish on my frontage after  the collection has passed?
A. It is the residents responsibility to remove any items remaining  following the collection date. Any remaining items will be deemed to  be littering and you will be charged for the removal costs.

Q. What can I do with the material in the “we WON’T collect” list?
A. Here are some suggested alternatives for disposing of additional waste:

Any bagged rubbish Drop it off at the Whakatane Recycling Park in Te Tahi St or if it will fit, put this in your wheelie bin for weekly kerbside collection.
Computers and TV’s Drop them off at the Whakatane Recycling Park.
Garden waste, tree trimmings Compost it, put it in your green waste wheelie bin if you have one or drop it off at the Whakatane Recycling Park.
Recyclables Put these in your recycling crate for weekly kerbside collection. If you need an additional crate, they can be purchased for a one off fee of $15 at the Whakatane Recycling Park.
Commercial and farm waste Arrange through a private waste collector.
Silage plastic Arrange collection through Agrecovery for recycling on

Bricks and concrete Drop them off at the Whakatane Recycling Park.
Glass (windows and windscreens) Drop them off at the Whakatane Recycling Park.
Oil and paint Drop them off at the Whakatane Recycling Park. Used household amounts of paint and oil are FREE!
Chemicals Drop them off at the Whakatane Recycling Park.
Fibrolite and asbestos Drop them off at the Whakatane Recycling Park by prior arrangement.
Car bodies, engines and tyres Drop tyres off at the Whakatane Recycling Park.  Some commercial scrap metal dealers will collect car bodies for FREE! Check the yellow pages for details.
Builders waste Arrange through a private waste collector.
Timber (treated or untreated) Drop them off at the Whakatane Recycling Park.
Batteries and gas cylinders Drop them off at the Whakatane Recycling Park for FREE!
Wire of any description Drop them off at the Whakatane Recycling Park.

Q. What if I am not in the area of the collection?
A. This collection is only being offered to residents living in urban areas (or in townships) in the District. Other residents can take advantage of Council’s great offer of 50% off for general refuse at the Whakatane Recycling Park until 31 December 2009. Please check the township maps for boundaries.
