Welcome to the Whakatane District Council

Whakatane Safer Communities

Here you will find information on creating a safe and healthy environment for community development.

Safer Communities

Whakatane District Council has a partnership with the Crime Prevention Unit (Ministry of Justice) to work together in reducing crime.  As a result, the Safer Whakatane and Districts Community Council (SWDCC) was set up to help reduce crime in the Whakatane district.

Three main sources of factual information were the NZ Census 2001, Police Statistics, and Community Crime and Safety Survey. The report drew on other information from key providers for health and social services as well.

The purpose of this report is to identify local crime issues and assist in the development of programmes to address those issues.

Key issues identified for the Whakatane district include:

  • Family violence
  • Dishonesty through burglaries and petty crime
  • Drug and alcohol abuse
  • Youth Offending
  • CrossRoads Programme for 16 and 17 year-old males (read more)

To address these issues a number of programmes, as outlined in the report, are currently operating.  The report will also be used to assist with long-term planning and the development of sustainable crime prevention initiatives for the Whakatane district.

Youth Issues

Engaging young people is important for the future development of any community. As part of its youth activities, a Parent Pack has been developed.

The Parent Pack provides parents of teenagers with some useful hints on how to deal with issues such as drugs, alcohol, driving, and sexuality information and experimentation.

Endorsed by the Mayor of Whakatane, the Parent Pack notes, "One of the most important factors in any relationship between a parent and their child is the establishment and implementation of strong and enforceable boundaries. ...boundaries provide safe, stable benchmarks from which to make decisions..."

Liquor Ban

A liquor ban is becoming a common tactic to make central business areas and holiday resorts, safer places for everyone to have a good time. The concept of the liquor ban has come in gradually and improvements have been made and mistakes have been corrected.

The District Council, Police and other interested community groups such as the Safer Communities Council have worked to develop a valuable collaborative approach towards a safer community for the Whakatane District.

Our idea was to use big road-marking signs to indicate where the liquor ban areas began

Also 200 small laminated signs where placed inside the liquor ban area on poles at eye level.

The Police said that the way the liquor ban was advertised, was a major contributing factor in helping Whakatane and Ohope have one of the quietest Christmas / New Year periods that their staff can remember.
