About our District

The Whakatane District is rich with natural resources and has many hours of sunshine that are the envy of other New Zealand regions.

Whakatane sits in the spectacular Eastern Bay, right beside the Pacific Ocean. Endless sandy beaches fringe the 54km coastline that stretches from Otamarakau in the west to Ohiwa in the east. You can enjoy world famous deep-sea fishing and marine sports.

The fertile lowlands of the Rangitaiki Plains stretch west to the farming areas around Murupara. Making up 41% of the District, Te Urewera National Park is a protected native forest that is home to a rich array of flora and fauna.

Whakatane is a haven for nature lovers and outdoors enthusiasts. Take a trip to White Island – a live volcano. Go whale watching and swim with dolphins. Walk, run or mountain bike along beautiful bush tracks.  Or just enjoy the sunshine.
