Motorcycle Education

The highest risk group of road users in the Eastern Bay of Plenty is Motorcyclists, so the Eastern Bay of Plenty Road Safety Programme has considerably increased the proportion of funding targeting this risk area. This is to ensure we increase engagement and educational opportunities for improved outcomes. We are also strengthening relationships with organisations such as Waiariki Whānau Mentoring to delivery targeted programmes at known high risk groups of unlicensed riders.
Programmes now being delivered include the delivery of a MAM (Motorcycle Awareness Month) event at Underwood and Wilkins Motorcycles each September, Basic Motorcycle Maintenance workshops, promotion and funding for FREE Ride Forever Courses at Bronze, Silver and Gold Levels and targeted Motorcycle Basic Handling Certificate courses for our high-risk rider groups.
Young Driver events
The Eastern Bay Road Safety Programme, in collaboration with a variety of local community partner organisations, delivers events for 16-24 years which aim to improve their knowledge of both how to gain a licence and stay safe on our roads.

We have now developed an annual programme of delivery which sees us run three school-based road safety events each year and moving between our urban and rural schools. In 2025 we delivered the Road Safety Roadshows in Murupara Area School, Te Wharekura o Rūātoki and Rangitāiki College in Edgecumbe.
