iPhone, iPad, and Android smartphones and tablets
This website's layout adjusts to smaller screen sizes on tablets and mobile phones. Our website also fully supports the built-in "pinch to zoom" function on mobile devices.
Inverting colours
This website's colour scheme has been selected for optimal readability whether you invert the screen's colours or not.
Please note that if you use the "Smart Invert" feature introduced in iOS 11 for iPhones and iPads, this will not invert colours on images within this website. If you prefer to invert the colours on images as well, use "Classic Invert" instead.
Accessing documents
Most information on this website is provided as standard web pages (HTML format). Most documents, including our official publications, are in PDF format. To read and print PDF files, you'll need a PDF reader such as Adobe Reader. Most modern computer operating systems include built-in support for PDF documents.
- Android users please note: the built-in Android Browser does not correctly handle downloads of PDF documents. If you are browsing this website using an Android device, we strongly recommend using Google Chrome as your browser.
If you have difficulty reading a PDF-only publication, please email us at info@whakatane.govt.nz for help. Include details of the document you want to access and the difficulty you are having.
Information held on external websites
When we link to information on other websites, we always try to link to standard web pages. If this is not possible, we may link directly to a PDF or Word document. These links will include the document format and file size in the link text.
Screenreaders
We have made every effort to make this website fully-accessible to visually-impaired visitors using screenreaders. If you have any difficulty using this site with a screenreader, please email info@whakatane.govt.nz and let us know.
How to use the ReadSpeaker Listen function
ReadSpeaker allows the text on this website to be read out loud to you. It provides you assistance if you have trouble reading text online. By having the text read out loud to you, you can understand the information on the website more easily. This makes the content more accessible and the website more pleasant to visit. As a user, you don't have to download anything.
How does it work?
Activate webReader by clicking the Listen button.

webReader also allows you to:
- Select text and click the listen button in the pop-up menu that appears to have the selected text read.
- Hover over a paragraph of text to have it read out automatically.
- View a clutter-free version of the web page with text in your preferred font, size and colour as it is read aloud and highlighted.
- Download an audio version of your content for offline listening.
- Translate a selected text to a number of languages and have the text read in the target language.
- Personalize reading speed, highlighting colours, and more.
- Select a word and find its definition in the dictionary.
Clear instructions on how to use each feature are provided in the Help Tool, which is found in the toolbar. Try reading through the Help Tool to pick up ideas on how to make optimal use of webReader's features!

Keyboard Navigation
webReader can be activated, i.e. focus can be set on the Listen button, with the access key "K". The access key "L" will set focus on the player and also start the reading. Many of the webReader tools and features also have a dedicated access key. Access keys are activated with modifier keys, which differ depending on the browser and the operating system used (see list of modifier keys for different environments here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Access_key)
Inside the player and toolbar, i.e. when the user has set focus on the player, tab/shift+tab can be used to navigate and the enter key to activate a certain button or option.
- Put focus on Listen button: Modifier + K
- Activate webReader player: Modifier + L
- Open/close toolbar: Modifier + 1
- Open Help feature: Modifier + I
- Other access keys: see Help feature
Please visit ReadSpeaker's website for more information about online text to speech.
Māori pronunciation
ReadSpeaker is a service provided for people who, for a variety of reasons, find it difficult to read a website page they wish to access. ReadSpeaker supports over 40 languages, but unfortunately, Te Reo Māori is not among them. ReadSpeaker will make its own "best guess" when it encounters Māori words and phrases, but because this is a purely software-driven tool, its pronunciation of non-English words (and many Kiwi-English words) will often be incorrect. Whakatāne District Council has no control over ReadSpeaker's pronunciation of te reo, but we do apologise for any inconvenience or possible offence the software’s mispronunciations may cause.
