Council shifts focus to supporting neighbours following severe weather
Whakatāne District Council’s Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) has now stood down following around 24 hours of persistent, heavy rain across the district.
Council teams monitored conditions and responded to weather-related impacts overnight and into this morning, particularly in areas that experienced concentrated rainfall, including Matatā, Manawahe, and Awakaponga. Clean-up efforts and work to restore access are now underway in these areas following multiple slips.
Local Controller Mike Avery says that although the rain has eased, risks remain.

Eight candidates have put their names forward to represent their communities in the Whakatāne District Council Community Board by-elections.
Nominations closed at noon today for the by-elections, which follow insufficient nominations at the triennial elections held on 11 October 2025.

The West End section of the walkway has been closed since a slip occurred following significant rainfall in 2022. A second slip in September 2023 further delayed reinstatement work and required additional investigation.

Whakatāne District Mayor says rates capping well-intentioned but poorly thought out
Whakatāne District Mayor Nandor Tanczos says the Government’s announcement of a rates range, replacing the earlier proposal for a strict rates cap, is well intentioned but is likely to make things worse for ratepayers.
“We all want rates to go down, but what is being proposed is largely the same system that has failed across the Tasman, with pretty dire consequences for local communities in New South Wales and Victoria,” he says.

New rating revaluation shows dip in Whakatāne home and land values
Quotable Value’s three-yearly revaluation of the Whakatāne District shows Whakatāne home values dip by 2% while land values are down 9%. Property owners will soon receive a Notice of Rating Valuation in the post with an updated rating value for their property.
The new rating valuations have been prepared for 17,277 properties by Quotable Value (QV) on behalf of Whakatāne District Council. They show the total rateable value for the district is now $16.4 billion with the land value of those properties now valued at $8.3 billion.
