Temporary Carpark Closure Tuesday – Bird Walk, Gorge Road, Whakatāne.
Please be aware that the ‘Bird Walk’ carpark on Gorge Road will be closed from 6am to 12 noon tomorrow (Tuesday 10 June) due to trucks delivering water pipes for essential infrastructure upgrades.
Alternative parking is available on Commerce Street, next to Rex Morpeth Park.
This is part of the ongoing Water Mains and Connections Renewal mahi, and we appreciate your patience and understanding while this important work is carried out.

Planned water shutdown notice: Whakatāne
Whakatāne District Council advises residents of a planned water shutdown in the listed areas to allow for essential connection works as part of the Water Mains and Connections Renewal Project.
Severe weather effects - 4/5 June
The Whakatāne District experienced widespread effects to a period of intense rain and strong winds.
Bay of Plenty Regional Council advisory
The Regional Council is advising that stock on low-lying land immediately beside the Rangitāiki River, and particularly in areas upstream from Te Teko, be moved to higher ground due to a risk of flooding.
This warning DOES NOT apply to areas protected by stopbanks and the Regional Council stresses that there is no risk of flooding in Edgecumbe or the Rangitāiki Plains area.
Planned Whakatāne water shutdown – Tuesday 3rd June, 2025
We will be carrying out essential connection works as part of the Water Mains and Connections Renewal Project.
Wastewater seepage - Central Whakatāne
Due to significant rainfall, wastewater seepage has occurred this afternoon from a manhole on Peace Street.
Some wastewater has entered the McAlister Street pump station, which discharges into the Whakatāne River. This can occur when heavy rain enters gully traps and overloads our sewer network.
Our Three Waters team is on-site and has stopped the seepage. The road remains open.
As a precaution, we advise against swimming or gathering shellfish / kaimoana from the Whakatāne River until water quality testing confirms it is safe.
Tropical Cyclone Tam - Weather Warning
Tropical Cyclone Tam has officially arrived, bringing significant wind and rainfall to our region.
Manawa Energy Matahina Dam Road Closure - From 2 May until 6 June
Galatea Road near Te Mahoe will be closed with a detour in place from Friday, 2 May until Tuesday, 6 June. Please allow a 15+ minute delay in your travel time.

Urgent water restrictions now in place for Whakatāne & Ōhope
Whakatāne District Council has implemented water restrictions due to critically low river flows affecting the Whakatāne and Ōhope water supply.
Water Shutdown tomorrow - Tāneatua Township

Time: 10:00 AM – 12 NOON
Properties Impacted: All Tāneatua Township
Whakatāne District Council wishes to advise you of a planned water shutdown in your area between the hours shown above. This is to enable repair works to be carried out on the 25mm pipe feed on the Tāneatua reservoir main.
Once water is back on, mains flushing will be carried out to remove any entrapped air or sediment in the line.

Whakatāne District Council wishes to advise you of a planned water shutdown in your area between the hours shown above. This is to enable maintenance work to be carried out on Mill Road, Whakatane.
Once water is back on, mains flushing will be carried out to remove any entrapped air or sediment in the line.

Upcoming road closure - section of Braemar Road
What's happening?
A culvert on Braemar Road (near property #310) requires replacement.
How will this impact me?
For the safety of all road users and contractors, a temporary closure is required for a section of Braemar Road between #281 and #329.
Access to properties within the closure will be permitted, however no vehicles may pass through the actual work site at #310 Braemar Road. The closure will be manned during daytime hours to provide directions as needed.
