Heavy Rain Warning - 19 November
An Orange Heavy Rain Warning is in place for Whakatāne District until 11pm tonight (Wednesday, 19 November).
Disposing of recalled coloured sand products
The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment has issued a public recall for rainbow sand from Educational Colours and coloured sand from Creatistics, after tests found tremolite (a naturally occurring asbestos).
They have advised anyone wishing to dispose of the recalled coloured sand products should contact their local council.
Water shutdown notice – Shaw Road subdivision
Whakatāne District Council will be carrying out connection works for the new watermains along SH30 and Huna Road. To complete this work safely, water will be turned off in the Shaw Road subdivision.
New online platform for building consent applications
Whakatāne District Council is moving to a new online platform for building consent applications – the new online platform is called Objective Build.

A wastewater overflow has occurred behind 8 Strathmore Place, flowing onto the field known as Red Conway Park.

A planned water shutdown is scheduled to allow for urgent repairs on the main water line, on Thursday, 25 September.

The team will be carrying out essential connection works as part of the water mains and connections renewal project.
Construction update – SH30 and Huna Road watermain upgrade, Whakatāne
Work is underway to install a new watermain along SH30 and Huna Road to support current needs and future growth in the area.
Planned water shutdown, Murupara – Thursday 11 September

We’re doing some important work to upgrade the water mains and connections on Oregon Drive. To safely carry out this mahi, we’ll need to temporarily turn off the water supply in your area at two different times during the day.

Whakatāne District Council has two planned water shutdowns scheduled for Thursday 14 August 2025, to carry out connection works as part of the Water Mains and Connections Renewal Project.
Unplanned water shutdown – Awakeri
An unplanned water shutdown is currently affecting properties in the Awakeri area due to a mains break. Repair crews are on site and working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.
At this stage, the estimated timeframe for restoring water supply is approximately six hours. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

A powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake near Russia this morning may generate unusual and unpredictable water activity in New Zealand.
What to expect:
- Small to moderate tsunami waves may reach New Zealand coastlines from midnight tonight.
- Most coastal areas could see waves between 0.3 and 1 metre.
- Dangerous currents and unpredictable water behaviour are likely, even if waves aren’t visible.

We have a planned water shutdown this Friday to carry out urgent repairs following a recent break on Wairaka Road.

Our district is saturated, so further slips, surface flooding, and rising rivers and streams are likely – especially near steep slopes and in low-lying areas. Please take care and drive to the conditions.
