The Council is inviting the community to give feedback on a proposed change to how household kerbside recycling collections could be funded.
Consultation opened today on a proposal to amend section 6.3.4 of the Waste Management and Minimisation Plan 2021 Action Plan. The change would allow a portion of the Council’s waste disposal levy funding to be used to support the household kerbside recycling collection service, where required.
The service is currently funded through targeted and general rates. If adopted, the proposal would provide more flexibility in how the household kerbside recycling service is funded and could help reduce the amount ratepayers contribute through targeted rates.
The Council is seeking feedback to ensure the proposal reflects the views and priorities of the district.
“We want to hear from our communities about whether they support this approach, and any benefits, concerns, or impacts they think it may have,” says Whakatāne District Council Waste and Resource Recovery Manager Lisa Eve.
Submissions close at 5pm on Wednesday, 27 May 2026. Elected Members will review feedback before making a final decision on whether to amend the Waste Management and Minimisation Plan scheduled for the end of June.
