For decades, the old cargo shed at Port Ōhope wharf stood quietly at the water's edge, watching boats come and go while storing the practical necessities of wharf life.
Today, that same weathered building is about to begin a new chapter as Wharfside - a vibrant community venue with panoramic harbour views.
What began as essential maintenance work in 2018-2019 has evolved into something much more significant for the local community.
What was once a purely functional space now awaits its transformation into a venue that can welcome everyone from intimate family gatherings to celebrations of 250 people.
"We're delighted with how this project has developed," says Nicola Burgess, Manager Tourism and Economic Development.
"What started as a summer trial in 2021 has proven there was real demand for this type of venue in our district," she said.
The story really took off when Wharfside first opened its doors as a summer tourism hub.
Suddenly, the quiet wharf came alive with the aroma of food trucks, the laughter of families enjoying coffee, and visitors exploring the harbourside setting.
Mata Brewery brought evening crowds who lingered on the deck watching the sun set over the water.
The early success highlighted opportunities for further development. The space struggled with heating and weather protection, limiting its potential for off-season events and private functions that the community wanted to host.
Rather than accept these limitations, the Council committed to a comprehensive upgrade programme funded through the 2023/24 Annual Plan, with additional support from Trust Horizon for electrical, kitchen, and lighting improvements, the space was soon to become a venue that could serve the community all year round.
The upgrades address every challenge that emerged during the trial years.
The building interior features new joinery, enhanced toilet facilities, a finishing kitchen, new bar installation, floor re-surfacing throughout, upgraded heating and lighting systems, and a new fire alarm system.
Outside, erosion protection measures, landscaping, and new shade installations improve the appeal and functionality of the venue.
"The upgraded venue now accommodates everything from intimate gatherings to large celebrations" explains Ms Burgess.
"From February to December, we can host special occasions, celebrations and functions. It's become a real asset for our district," she said.
With final works wrapping up over the coming weeks, bookings are now open, allowing the community to secure their preferred dates.
The community is invited to experience the transformed venue firsthand at an open day on Thursday, 30 October, where visitors can explore the upgraded facilities and discover the potential of this harbourside space for themselves.
During the peak summer months (December to February), Wharfside will continue its role as a tourism activity hub, welcoming visitors with food trucks, local operators, and that special harbourside energy that made it popular from the beginning.
"We're excited to see how the community will use this enhanced space during the off-season months," says Ms Burgess.
"The venue will generate revenue through bookings, but more importantly, it's designed to be a genuine community asset that showcases what makes this area special."
This project demonstrates how thoughtful investment can create lasting value for Eastern Bay residents while supporting the local visitor economy.
The old cargo shed that once stored nets and equipment will soon store something far more precious - the memories made when people gather to celebrate life's important moments against the stunning backdrop of Ōhiwa Harbour.
