Friday 1 August is the deadline to enrol and get your nominations in for this year's local elections. If you want to vote, you need to be enrolled. If you want to stand, you need to be nominated. Both opportunities close at the same moment - 12 noon on Friday, 1 August 2025.
Chief Executive Steven Perdia is clear about the timeframe.
"Noon, Friday, 1 August is your deadline. If you’ve ever thought about standing up for your community, this is your moment. Whether you're ready to lead where you live or want to help make sure the right people do - this date matters."
This year's elections are shaping up to be more accessible and community-focused than ever. You don't need political experience to stand - just a genuine commitment to your community, and a willingness to listen, learn and lead.
But it's not just about standing as a candidate - every voice matters.
"Local government is where democracy gets real," Mr Perdia explains.
"These are the people deciding things about roads, parks, and community facilities and projects which ultimately determine rates. When you vote, you're choosing who makes decisions about your daily life. When you stand as a candidate, you're stepping up to be part of those crucial conversations."
Mr Perdia says the Council should reflect the people it serves - tradies, teachers, parents, graduates, long-time locals, and newcomers alike.
"If you know your community, consider representing it. We want a council table that reflects our district's diversity. This is your opportunity to go from resident to representative.”
“Whether you’re standing or voting, your participation strengthens local democracy and invests in your community's future. Empty seats don't speak, and silent voices can't be heard," says Mr Perdia.
“Every candidate brings fresh perspective. Every voter invests in the future of our place.”
Opportunities include the role of Mayor, councillor positions across six wards (including three Māori wards), and community board seats. Plus, all voters will help decide on the future of Māori ward representation for future elections.

"From the parks where families play to the infrastructure that connects us all, local decisions shape everything about living here,” says Mr Perdia.
“Friday, 1 August is your final call to be part of making those decisions - don't miss it."
