Access between Whakatāne District and Ōpōtiki is currently cut off due to flooding and multiple road closures.
Both Wainui Road and State Highway 2 (Tāneatua to Kutarere via Waimana Gorge) are closed. Wainui Road is underwater, with surface flooding exceeding 200mm. Crews are onsite monitoring water levels and checking for underlying damage to the road.
As a result, there is currently no way to travel between Whakatāne and Ōpōtiki. This is expected to cause significant disruption for commuters, travellers, and anyone trying to return home after work, school, or appointments.
Whakatāne District Council has activated its Emergency Operations Centre in response to the situation. Council staff are working closely with the Bay of Plenty Regional Council Flood Room, Ōpōtiki District Council, NZTA and emergency services to monitor river levels, assess road conditions, and understand how long these closures might remain in place.
"At this time, there is no confirmed timeframe for reopening either route. Conditions remain changeable, and river levels are still rising," says Local Duty Controller, Nicholas Woodley.
Residents and travellers either side of the road closures are encouraged to make arrangements to stay with friends or family.
“We understand how difficult this is for our communities - especially for those who may now be unable to get home, and with uncertain timeframes," says Mr Woodley.
Our teams are working hard to stay on top of the situation, support emergency services, and keep the public informed. If you're impacted, please prioritise your safety, avoid floodwaters, and make alternative plans where you can.”
The Council encourages residents to check in with whānau or colleagues who may be affected and consider whether they may need support due to the disruption.
