With just under two weeks left to apply, young people across the Whakatāne District who are passionate about making a difference in their communities are encouraged to apply for the 2026 Whakatāne District Youth Council.
The Youth Council brings together a diverse group of young people from across the district to take part in community initiatives and projects, provide fresh and youthful insights to Council, and help make a positive difference across the Whakatāne District.
Whakatāne District Council Community Partnerships Manager Frank Begley says the Youth Council plays an important role in supporting young people to get involved in their communities.
“It’s about empowering young people to step into leadership roles and have a meaningful voice on the issues that matter to them. It also gives them a better understanding of how decision-making works in local government. We’d particularly encourage rangatahi who live outside of Whakatāne township to put their name forward. The Youth Council is for all young people in our District.”
One of the 2025 Youth Council’s standout achievements last year was the Kopeopeo Bakehouse mural. A once grey, tagged wall has been transformed into a vibrant Kiwi Kai mural, brightening the street and strengthening youth engagement. The mural is a lasting reminder of what young people can achieve when they work together to bring their ideas to life.
The 2026 Youth Council will reflect the voices of young people from across the Whakatāne District and support initiatives that promote youth wellbeing, participation and connection.
Applications are open for rangatahi aged 14–24 and close on Friday, 20 February 2026.
