Whakatāne District Council and Trust Horizon have joined forces to launch a new fund to support bold, local responses to climate change and youth development.
The Whakatāne Community Climate Action and Youth Development Fund opens for its first funding round today (1 July 2025), with $95,000 available in the 2025/26 year.
The fund aims to back projects that reduce carbon emissions, build community resilience, and support rangatahi into climate-related education and training.
“We know our communities are already feeling the effects of climate change, and this fund is about empowering local people to lead local solutions,” says Lou Hunt, Climate Change and Resilience Manager at Whakatāne District Council.
“We’re looking for bold, equity-driven ideas that will create long-term impact.”
Two funding streams are available:
- Climate Action Fund: Up to $20,000 per application, for projects that reduce emissions or strengthen resilience.
- Youth Development Fund: Up to $5,000 to support climate-related education or training for people aged above 13 but under 24.
Funding will be allocated on an annual rolling basis, and there is no set amount reserved for each round. If the full fund is allocated in Round 1, no further rounds will be held in 2025/26.
Projects must align with the principles in Council’s Our Climate Pathway: He Rongoā Āhuarangi, and applicants will need to demonstrate how their project benefits the community, delivers measurable outcomes, and has a lasting impact on reducing emissions or building resilience.
Trust Horizon Chief Executive Derek Caudwell says the partnership reflects a shared commitment to a more sustainable and empowered Eastern Bay.
"This fund supports the ideas, innovation and leadership already driving the move away from fossil fuels in our communities, especially among young people."
The first funding round is now open and closes on 15 August 2025. More information, including eligibility and how to apply, is available at whakatane.govt.nz/climatefund
