If you’ve got a collection of old household batteries lying around, now’s your chance to drop them off safely and for free.
Whakatāne District Council is hosting a ‘Battery Take Back’ event on Saturday, 14 June from 10am to 12pm at the Whakatāne Resource Recovery Centre. The event is open to all and is a simple way to dispose of used batteries responsibly.
Radio 1XX will be on hand with spot prizes, a free sausage sizzle, and Council staff will be available to answer questions about battery disposal and other recycling options.
Nigel Clarke, Solid Waste Manager, says the battery drive is all about supporting the community to safely dispose of batteries and protect the environment.
"Batteries can be harmful if they're not disposed of properly. They contain materials that can leak into the environment or even cause fires when they're thrown in with general waste and recycling," says Nigel.
"We're making it easy for people to do the right thing. Bring your used household batteries in, have a chat with our team, and enjoy a sausage while you're here."
The battery drive will accept common household batteries – including AA, AAA, coin cell, and rechargeable types – as well as larger batteries like car batteries. While commercial volumes won’t be accepted, staff can advise on safe disposal options for businesses.
"We’re here to help people learn more about safe disposal and how to keep hazardous waste out of landfill. Every battery recycled makes a difference," says Nigel.
So, round up those old batteries and head down to the transfer station for a practical morning out, it’s a small action with a big impact.
