Ride The Runway is back at Whakatāne Airport on Saturday, 18 October, offering cyclists of all ages and abilities a unique opportunity to ride down the runway in a fun, safe, and family-friendly environment.
Community Safety Advisor Richard Hamer says the event has grown rapidly over the years. “Our previous event was attended by 225 keen cyclists, and due to its huge success, this year’s event is open to 300 participants. Ride The Runway is a truly unique event that gives people the chance to experience the airport – and the runway – like never before,” he said.

Brought to the community by Whakatāne District Council, Bike Whakatāne Trust, JNP Aviation, and Cycle Without Age EBOP, Ride The Runway combines the excitement of cycling with a great whānau day out. The event also serves as a fundraising opportunity for Bike Whakatāne Trust, with a $10 per person entry fee supporting volunteer safety marshals and a free sausage sizzle after the ride. This year, an ice cream truck and coffee cart will also be on site.
Tickets are required for all participants, including parents walking alongside children on balance bikes. To secure your spot, families are encouraged to contact Maureen at cwa.easternbop@gmail.com in advance.
All riders must arrive by 12 noon for a safety briefing. Participants will also have the chance to explore Whakatāne Flying School’s facilities and see a variety of planes during the event. The event concludes at 1:30pm.
Ride The Runway is set to be a highlight of the season for local families, combining fun, fitness, and aviation in one unforgettable experience.
