The new lights at Rugby Park are installed, operational, and ready to transform evening sport in Whakatāne.
New sports field lighting now stands ready above the main field, marking a turning point for a facility that has served the community for decades but has been limited to daylight hours until now.
The project was made possible through the generous support of Trust Horizon, providing $224,092 of funding. Without this substantial investment, evening sport at Rugby Park would have remained out of reach.
"The partnership with Trust Horizon has been instrumental in making this happen," said Alexandra Pickles, General Manager Community Experience.
"Their commitment to active, sustainable communities has delivered something our sports clubs and families have been calling for - the ability to use Rugby Park when it suits them, not just when the sun is up.
"We also recognise the passion and energy of Matt Te Pou and the Eastern Bay of Plenty Sub Union. These lights mean more people can use the facility more often, in ways that fit around work and family life."
Trust Horizon Chair David Glover said the project aligns with the Trust's vision for building vibrant, healthy communities through quality infrastructure.

"This is transformational investment in community pride - bringing people together through sport and recreation. It's infrastructure that enables communities to thrive."
Matt Te Pou from Whakatāne and Eastern Bay Rugby says the lights make rugby way more accessible for everyone.
"This is huge for the sport here," Mr Te Pou said.
"Now people who work during the day can actually get involved - whether that's playing, coaching, or just coming along to support. We can run evening trainings, host weekend night games, get more people on the field. It just opens everything up.
"Massive thanks to Trust Horizon for backing this. It's a game-changer."
The installation features 16 energy-efficient LED lights mounted on four 20-metre-high poles, providing competition-level lighting that meets requirements for club rugby.
"We're not just talking about upgrades anymore - we're delivering them," Ms Pickles said.
"And we have Trust Horizon to thank for making this one possible."
