Tsunami advisory following Russian earthquake
A powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake near Russia this morning may generate unusual and unpredictable water activity in New Zealand.
What to expect:
- Small to moderate tsunami waves may reach New Zealand coastlines from midnight tonight.
- Most coastal areas could see waves between 0.3 and 1 metre.
- Dangerous currents and unpredictable water behaviour are likely, even if waves aren’t visible.
What this means for you:
- Stay away from beaches, harbours, and coastal areas from midnight onwards.
- Do not go into the water - strong surges can pull you out to sea.
- Boaties: stay away from marinas, harbours, and river mouths.
- Do not head to the beach to watch.
A dramatic wall of water is not expected. Instead, a series of strong and dangerous currents may last for several hours.
Important note:
These tsunami surges could push additional water onto already-flooded areas such as Wainui Road, which may delay its reopening.
We are closely monitoring conditions and will provide further updates as soon as more information becomes available.
