Heavy rain and thunderstorms expected
MetService has issued Orange Heavy Rain Warnings for the Whakatāne District, and thunderstorms are now also in the forecast. Wet and potentially hazardous conditions are expected across the region from Thursday through to Friday.
West of Whakatāne
- Warning in place from 8am Thursday to 3am Friday
- 90 to 120mm of rain expected, especially inland
- Localised downpours up to 40mm per hour
- Risk of thunderstorms and squally showers
Whakatāne and east
- Warning in place from 12pm Thursday to 12pm Friday
- 100 to 130mm of rain likely, with up to 180mm possible near the ranges
Thunderstorms could bring sudden, intense bursts of rain. These conditions may cause surface flooding, slips, and hazardous driving conditions. Localised downpours can lead to flash flooding, particularly in low-lying areas and near streams or rivers.
How to prepare:
- Clear drains and gutters around your property
- Avoid low-lying or flood-prone areas during heavy rain
- Drive to the conditions and avoid driving through floodwaters
- Keep pets safe and check in on neighbours
