Access between Whakatāne District and Ōpōtiki is now restored
Wainui Road and State Highway 2 have reopened following flood damage.
After significant disruption caused by recent flooding, Wainui Road and State Highway 2 (SH2) have reopened, restoring vital connections between Whakatāne District and Ōpōtiki.
The floods caused extensive damage, resulting in reduced access and temporary isolation for some communities. Thanks to the tireless efforts of road crews working around the clock, these key routes are now passable with extreme caution.
Road Status Update:
- Wainui Road is currently reduced to one lane at the S Bends, with stop/go traffic controls in place. Motorists are advised to drive with care.
- Waiotahi Bluffs (SH2) remains down to one lane.
- Matakerepūru (SH2) is fully open with both lanes operational.
Thank you to our communities for their patience and understanding during this challenging time.
Further updates on road conditions and closures across the district will be provided as repairs progress.
Boil Water Notice for Rūātoki
Due to recent heavy rainfall, the Rūātoki Water Treatment Plant’s ultraviolet (UV) treatment system is currently unable to operate effectively. The rainfall has caused increased turbidity (cloudiness) in the water supply, which prevents the UV system from fully neutralising harmful bacteria and viruses. As a result, a Boil Water Notice is now in effect for all residents of Rūātoki.
