The aronga/purpose of this fund is to support projects, activities and programmes that make the most of the waterways and marine environment in the Whakatāne District. Things like educational projects, safety programmes, and water sports, are all eligible.
This fund also supports environmental initiatives that are directly linked to the Whakatāne District’s waterways and marine environment.
The Te Pūaha General Fund is designed for organisations.

Applications
There are two rounds for this fund in 2026. Applications are open from:
Monday, 13 April to Sunday, 3 May 2026
Monday, 14 September to Sunday, 4 October 2026
Funding available
Up to $60,000 is available for the April funding round.
Up to $40,000 is available for the September funding round.
Eligibility
- Applications must have a direct link to the Whakatāne District’s waterways and marine environment.
- This fund cannot be used to finance ongoing operational costs for organisations. The purchase of equipment is considered eligible for funding.

Funding Decisions
Funding decisions are made at Community Funding Committee meetings. The funding panel comprises of three Councillors, with support from council staff. This includes a representative from Ports and Harbours, whose role is to report to and advise the committee on the applicants and their applications.
