The Rates Rebates Scheme provides a rebate of up to $805 for low-income earners who were paying rates for the home in which they were living on 1 July 2025.
Eligibility and benefits
People who are eligible for a rates rebate will pay less in rates to the Council. The maximum rebate is $805 for the 2025-26 financial year. If you would like to find out if you are eligible, use the rates rebate calculator.
How to apply
Application forms are available from your local Council or can be downloaded from the Department of Internal Affairs. You need to apply to Whakatāne District Council, who have authority to process applications.
What do I need to provide?
When applying for a rates rebate, you must provide the following:
- Accurate information about your income (and that of any spouse/partner or joint homeowner who lives with you) for the tax year ended 31 March 2025.
- Your rates notice
Please wait until you get your first annual rates invoice before applying for a rebate.
Income threshold changes
As part of the 2025 Government Budget, income thresholds for rates rebates have increased. From 1 July 2025, SuperGold cardholders with a household income of up to $45,000 may now be eligible for a rates rebate. For non-cardholders, the threshold has increased to $32,210.
