The aronga/purpose of this fund is to support bilingual events and activities that help Whakatāne and Ngāti Awa meet the Reorua ki Whakatāne goals.

Funding available

There is a total pool of $25,000 per financial year. There are two rounds of funding with $12,500 available each round, these align with Matariki and Te Wiki o te Reo Māori.

Whāinga/Goals for Reorua ki Whakatāne

• Improve understanding, proficiency, and use of te reo Māori o Ngāti Awa
• Te Reo Māori o Ngāti Awa is seen, heard, felt, spoken and valued throughout Whakatāne.
• Te Reo Māori o Ngāti Awa is increasingly used and inter-generationally transmitted by our communities.
• Whakatāne residents and communities demonstrate that they value te reo Māori o Ngāti Awa as a key part of our Whakatāne identity.
• The profile of te reo o Wairaka is significantly enhanced, maintained and enduring.

Eligibility

• Not-for-profit organisations and locally-owned businesses in Whakatāne.
• Applicants and their kaupapa must reside in the Whakatāne District. 
• Funds are currently available from the Reorua fund for not-for-profit purposes and projects, which support the Whakatāne Reorua whāinga goals.
• Priority will be given to those kaupapa that a wide range of people will be able to participate in. 
• Applications are accepted in Te Reo Māori and English.

What we don't fund

• Projects/events that are being conducted or held outside of the Whakatāne District.
• Groups operating outside of the Whakatāne District.
• Overseas travel. 
• Funds for the creation of loans, scholarships, gifts etc.
• No retrospective applications will be considered.
• Capital items in general. The exception is bilingual signage which can be reused or installed on a permanent basis.
• Commercial or private organisations whose primary purpose is profit-generation.
• Debt servicing or repayment.
• Legal expenses.
• Activities that promote religious ministry or political purposes, or activities where the main purpose is to promote religious, ethical, commercial, or political views of an organisation.    
• Medical expenses. 
• Statutory functions, activities, and services (e.g., core education, policing, health care etc.).
• Salaries.
• Purchase or promotion of alcohol, tobacco, vaping products, or psychoactive substances.

Other important information

• Funds must be used for the purpose for which they were granted. 
• Successful applications will be selected by the Funding Committee panel.
• The decision will be final, and no correspondence will be entered into. 
• Successful applicant/s must acknowledge Reorua ki Whakatāne in their promotional activities.
• Project funds may only be spent as approved in your application.
• Projects or events must be completed within 12 months of receiving funding.
• Reporting must be completed as below.
• Any unspent funds must be returned within one month.

Reporting

Once completed you will be required to provide us with a report on your kaupapa. This report must include:

1. Number of attendees.
2. How your event/project met the Reorua ki Whakatāne goals and strategic priorities.
3. Copies of receipts and other relevant financial documents.
4. Photographs of the event/project should be provided wherever possible. 
5. Videos welcome.
6. We accept the reports in both Te Reo Māori and English.
7. The report must be provided within three months of the event being held or the project being completed.

Funding Committee panel

The Funding Committee is the required delegation for Whakatāne District Council community funding decisions. The committee comprises three Councillors. They will be assisted by a panel comprising of two representatives from Ngāti Awa and one representative from Māori Strategic Partnerships, whose role will be to report to and advise the committee on the applicants and their applications.

Application Criteria

1. Must align with Ngāti Awa and Whakatāne District Council Reorua goals, values and principles.
2. Applications must be transparent and the applicant accountable.

Applications will be treated in accordance with the principles of the Privacy Act 2020.
