Update 12 July 2018

Works taking place on Galatea Road Further delays in construction of the retaining wall and cutting of the slip faces has occurred due to difficult ground conditions, wet weather, and other external influences. Therefore, a further extension to the road closure period is required.

The road closure is now extended through 20 August and will re-open the morning of 21 August. Existing detour routes will remain.

Update 14 May 2018

Due to limited access behind the slip-face, the closure to Galatea Road will need to be extended through until 13 July so the construction of the steel post and timber panel retaining wall can be completed safely before traffic flows resume.

Update 10 April 2018

The project duration has been extended to 18 May, and the road will be closed until then.

Washout on Galatea Road

Whakatāne District Council will be closing the following road to all traffic so the Council can permanently reinstate both lanes of a section of Galatea Road located approximately 4 km north of the Matahina Dam. The works will include the construction of a retaining structure, bank trimming, and road reconstruction works.

The reinstatement works are required to repair a large under-slip that occurred during the April 2017 severe weather events.

Roads to be closed to traffic:

  • Galatea Road – 3.6 km north of Matahina Dam – between Macdonald Road and Te Mahoe Township
  • Period of closure: 9–24 April 2018

The above dates are weather-dependent and could also be affected by other unforeseen events. The public will be given as much notice as possible of any changes to these dates.

A detour route via Tahuna Road will be clearly signposted during the construction period.

This closure is made under the Local Government Act 1974.
