Road Closure - Section of Wainui Road

5am, Saturday 14 October until 4pm, Sunday 15 October.

Due to significant maintenance and repair required to Tunanui Stream Bridge, Whakatāne District Council advises a section of Wainui Road will be temporarily closed from 5am, Saturday 14 October under 4pm, Sunday 15 October.

This bridge is located on Wainui Road / Pacific Coast Highway between Burma Road and Tio Ōhiwa (Ōhiwa Oyster Farm) - see map below.

Works will commence with manual traffic control (stop/go) in place on Friday 13 October between the hours of 9am and 3pm, to ready the site to minimise the time the road is closed. Please expect traffic delays.

Following this, the road will be closed from 5am, Saturday 14 October until 4pm, Sunday 15 October. Please note, Wainui Road at the site of the bridge repair will not be passable at all during this time.

Residents will have access either end of Wainui Road to the bridge site, but as per the above, there will be no access past the bridge during the closure hours. Please note, residents from Paparoa, Burke, Te Kooti, Stanley, McCoy, and Wainui Roads will need to use the alternative route toward Nukuhou to access State Highway 2.

When the road is re-opened from 4pm, Sunday 15 October, this section of road will be unsealed and a temporary speed restriction will be in place. Please drive with care through the area.

From Monday 16th October, there will be manual traffic control (stop/go) in place to allow for re-surfacing of this section of the road, please expect delays.

This work is weather dependant. The alternate dates for closing are 5am, Saturday 28 October, reopening 4pm, Sunday 29 October, with the preparation works on Friday 27 October and surface works occurring on Monday 30 October, using stop/go. We will advise of any change via our Facebook page and website.

Please note, Tio Ōhiwa (Ōhiwa Oyster Farm) will remain OPEN during this time, with access available via Ōhope. While the 2023 General Election is on Saturday 14 October (during this road closure), members of the public will not be disadvantaged. Voting is open now and in addition, voting sites are available in Kutarere, Nukuhou, Waimana, Tāneatua and Ōhope.

We apologise for any disruption this may cause.

Tēnā koutou i ngākaunui mai / Thanks for your understanding
