Following a prolonged period of heavy rain, the District's roading network and walkways have been affected by closures and slips.

  • Herepuru Road  - OPEN, slip clean up
  • Tahuna Road - OPEN, slip clean up
  • Ngā Tapuwae o Toi Walkway, CLOSED, from West End Ōhope-Ōtarawairere Bay return

Additional information:

  • There are still minor slips across the District's roads which our crews are working to clear.
  • As the conditions dry we are likely to see further slips, so it's important that despite the sunshine, we all continue to drive with caution.
  • Please be aware of an increase in potholes across the District as a result of the prolonged wet weather. Our teams will work hard to repair potholes promptly however we ask for patience as we work through our priority list.
  • The track/steps of Ngā Tapuwae o Toi walkway from West End Ōhope over to Ōtarawairere Bay have been washed away due to a slip at West End. Please be careful around the area as the steps have washed up on to shore and there may be wood and nail debris in the area. The track is CLOSED, from West End Ōhope-Ōtarawairere Bay return.
  • Council reminds residents of the following precautions when living near escarpments:

▪️ Residents whose properties are at the base of escarpments are advised to not occupy the rear ground floor rooms of their dwellings until 24 hours after each rainfall event has ended.

▪️ Sleep in a room on the opposite side from the escarpment.

▪️ Residents at the top of escarpments should monitor the ground adjacent to the escarpment edge for any sign of ground cracks or tree instability, and contact Council with any concerns.

▪️ If you are concerned about escarpment stability, consider self-evacuating to a location where there is no landslide hazard.
