The Council is currently made up of a Mayor who is elected by the community at large and ten Councillors who are elected from four wards. There are also 5 Community Boards covering the total area of the district. Each Board has 6 Members elected by the residents within the Community Board area and 1 appointed Councillor.
Information is available for any person wishing to stand for any of the elected positions - A Candidate Information Booklet - (PDF, 4.86 MB) can be downloaded from here or pick one up from the Council Office - the booklet contains all of the information that you need to know to about the Election.
Are you interested in standing for a position on the Council and want to know more about what it entails? Then come along to the Prospective Candidate Evenings where ex-Councillor Barney Gray and Community Board member Clive McIndoe will provide an elected Members view on the what it takes to be an effective representative of your community - these will be held in the Council Chamber on Wednesday, 28 July at 6.00 pm and at the Murupara Sports Pavilion on Thursday, 5 August 2010 at 4.00 pm. Representatives from the BOP District Health Board and BOP Regional Council will also be present to talk about being an elected Member within their organisations.
Elections are held every three years in conjunction with the Local Electoral Act 2001 and the Local Electoral Regulations 2001 (and amendments).
Every person who enrols on an electoral roll is eligible to vote as a residential elector. Enrolment is must if you wish to stand for the election or to vote for the candidates - link to the elections.org site from here.
If, however, you live in one district and have property in another you are entitled to enrol as a ratepayer elector for that district - you can access the Ratepayer Enrolment form - (PDF, 27 KB)
