The Whakatāne District Council's vision is to be known as the place of choice for people to live, work and play.

In achieving our vision:

Our purpose is to lead the Whakatāne District to sustainable economic, social, environmental and cultural well-being.

Whakatāne District Council has a variety of funding schemes available to community groups, voluntary organisations, and in some cases individuals.

This section outlines the committee structure adopted by Council and appointments of Councillors to outside organisations.

The Whakatāne District Sister Cities Association has two Sister City relationships, one with Kamagaya in Japan and the other with Warwick in Australia. It also has a Friendship Agreement with Kita Tachibana (now Shibukawa City) in Japan.

Following the October 2023 general election resulting in a change in central government, the reform programmes established under the previous government are taking a new direction.

Whakatāne is becoming reorua in a partnership between Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa and Whakatāne District Council.
