Council has secured $494,000 of funding from Waka Kotahi (New Zealand Transport Agency) to work with Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa, community and town centre businesses to co-design and activate space in the Kākahoroa Drive car park area.

This was a highly successful programme including nine roading, infrastructure and environmental projects from May to November 2020.

This project was successfully completed in late 2021. In April 2021, work began to replace and upgrade the water main that runs along the Apanui School side of McAlister Street, from Domain Road to Beach Street.

Whakatāne District Council is working with local dog park enthusiasts to develop a dog park at Warren Park, Whakatāne.

The Earthquake-Prone Buildings Programme is a response to proposed Government legislation covering the identification, assessment and strengthening requirements for earthquake-prone buildings.

In 2013, Council began planning for an update of the Whakatāne River Greenway Concept Plan to provide direction and a framework for the future development of the walkway and reserves adjacent to the Whakatāne River.

Whakatāne District Council is actively improving Sullivan lake. The current steps include a stormwater improvement system, a lake edge retaining wall and a sediment control system.

Council’s Projects and Services Committee agreed with the recommendation that engineering options should not be pursued on 12 December 2012. The Committee recommended that instead, planning and regulatory options should be developed to identify hazard zones which would take into account the level of risk involved for all properties in the township.

As a result of the earthquake in 1987 and subsidence in the intervening years, the wastewater system in Egdecumbe has been significantly damaged. Investigations have identified defects and faults in the system. Council has prepared a plan to undertake all required repairs to provide a long term solution.
