Ōhope Wharf Remediation Project

This 2020 project was the most significant investment ever in the Ōhope Wharf.

The wharf was built by the Whakatāne Harbour Board in 1957 and it had served us well for nearly 70 years - but it was starting to show its age. The project successfully repaired and strengthened the wharf's supporting structures, ensuring it would serve our communities for many years to come.

The project signalled a significant investment in infrastructure improvements by Whakatāne District Council and was carried out by Construction Techniques Ltd - trading as BBR Contech. They drew upon a pool of 8-10 local workers, including welders, formworkers, and general labourers. All workers received skills development and training opportunities during their employment on these specialist projects.

Most of the work took place under the wharf.

Our contractors used a technique called hydroblasting (high pressure waterblasting) to prepare the wharf for some new concrete. Safety and protecting our environment were primary concerns, so they installed special equipment to trap dust and debris.

  • Contractors were on-site from mid-August 2020 and the project was mostly completed in time for the busy summer months.
  • The improvements are expected to more than double the structure’s lifespan.
  • This investment in the Ōhope Wharf was 100 percent funded through the Harbour Fund.
