Annual over 80's event on the horizon

Whakatāne District residents over the age of 80 are encouraged to circle Tuesday, 5 December in their calendar for the annual festive morning tea. The occasion, hosted jointly by Whakatāne District Council and Community Boards, is an opportunity to acknowledge the contribution the older generation has made to our communities.

This year's morning tea will be held in the Reception Lounge at the Whakatāne War Memorial Hall on Tuesday, 5 December, starting at 9.30am. Guests can look forward to being served hot beverages and delicious food by Mayor Dr Victor Luca, Councillors and Community Board representatives, while enjoying entertainment provided by gorgeous local pre-schoolers.

Mayor Luca says the event, now in its twenty-third year, is much-anticipated by elected members and those in the wider community.

"It is a real pleasure to host the over-80's morning tea,” he says. "It’s a wonderful event that brings people from all walks of life together to reflect on the year that has been, and also enables elected members to give back to those who have given so much."

Talented people from the Floral Arts Society will again lend their artistic flair to style the venue, which is always a highlight for the keen gardeners among the guest list. RSVPs are not required, and partners and caregivers of 80-years-plus residents are also welcome to attend. Anyone from outlying communities can contact the Council to help arrange transport to and from the event.

"I encourage anyone in the over-80 age group to join us for this occasion," says Mayor Luca. "I'm very much looking forward to seeing everyone and catching up over a cup of tea.”
