Appointment of Independent Chairperson - Risk and Assurance Committee

The Whakatāne District Council has a vision of ‘more life in life’ - for communities to flourish, fulfil their potential, and live life to its fullest. In support of this vision, Council is undertaking a strong programme of investment in the organisation while at the same time navigating through an exciting context of local government change and opportunity.

The Council is seeking a person to actively lead and enhance governance and accountability as an independent appointee to the Risk and Assurance Committee, in the role of the Committee Chairperson.

The appointee will play an important role in overseeing the effectiveness of Council's:

  • Enterprise risk management
  • Internal control environment
  • Legal responsibilities
  • Statutory compliance
  • External auditing processes

The Risk and Assurance Committee consists of the Mayor, three Councillors, an independent Chairperson, plus one external appointee. A selection panel comprised of the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and Chief Executive will assess expressions of interest, appoint the independent member, and negotiate remuneration.

The term of the appointment is for the remainder of the Council’s 2019-22 triennium, with the ability to reappoint.
