Council to implement infringement for illegal dumping

Illegal dumpers in the Whakatāne District could now be stung with a $200 fine after Council backed a staff recommendation for further enforcement at last Thursday’s (30 March) Council meeting.

Carl Redaelli Manager Community Regulation said Council staff receive numerous complaints weekly of illegal dumping of rubbish within the District.

“The resolution passed by Council will allow Council Compliance Officers to utilise an infringement where appropriate dependant on the circumstances.”

Anyone who sees illegal dumping taking place is asked to record the vehicle registration number and any other information that may assist in identifying those responsible.

“Under this new approach, if a person can be identified, an infringement for $200 will be issued. This will hopefully deter people from illegally dumping if they know there is a financial consequence.”

“People might think they're saving themselves some dollars by throwing out their rubbish illegally, but they're putting that cost back on to the ratepayers, and on the environment,” Mr Redaelli said.
