Hui Hue exhibition set to spark curiosity in CBD

Christmas shoppers passing by and visitors to Te Kōputu a te whanga a Toi / Whakatāne Library and Galleries, will have their curiosity sparked following the instalment of a striking new exhibition sitting front and centre at the Gallery. Hui Hue Exhibition on now at Te Kōputu

The Matapihi Gallery is located within the front window space at Te Kōputu a te whanga a Toi and is now home to the Hui Hue exhibition. This pop-up display features first time artists and growers from all over the motu whose mission it was to grow Hue from seed.

These particular hue, a Polynesian plant, have been grown, cultivated, dried and adorned in Aotearoa New Zealand, each bringing forth a unique perspective from each artist; and with over forty hue displayed, a playful take on its form and uses is clear to see.

After a week on show in Ōpōtiki, Curator Israel Randell says she jumped at the opportunity to display the works.

“I’m passionate about artists activating our spaces and showcasing various art forms to both locals and manuhiri / visitors to the District.” She continues, “With the window into Te Kōputu being in such a prominent location, we know this particular exhibition will spark the curiosity of those passing by.”

“We hope that during the busy coming weeks those walking by are stopped in their tracks and take a moment to pause and reflect on the creativity and imagination behind Hui Hue and soak up that moment amongst the buzz of the festive season.” Israel adds, “Even better, it might just tempt some to step inside our Galleries and immerse themselves deeper in the magic of art…”

The immersive installation is a collaboration with Tangimoe Clay and sits to the left as you enter Whakatāne Library and Galleries. Most of the works are for sale on a cash and carry basis just in time for the festive season. The exhibition will be on show until the end of January.
