Te Kōputu a te Whanga a Toi is proud to announce the opening of Thou Shalt Not, an immersive exhibition featuring the multifaceted works of renowned Māori artist and activist, Tame Iti.

Thou Shalt Not, a title from Tame’s memories as a young child being asked to recite the Ten Commandments at school, opens this Thursday and provides a unique glimpse into the distinguished artist's life through the dynamic range of works.

This reference to the Ten Commandments serves as a metaphorical framework for the exhibition, and a standout feature is the inclusion of iconic works, symbols of resistance and resilience. His nephew's horse blanket which formed a vital part of his 1995 Fiscal Envelope submission to the Crown is one of many powerful representations of both his artistic endeavours and commitment to advocating for Māori rights.

Curator Exhibitions Aimee Ratana encourages members of the public to immerse themselves in Tame Iti's world, reflect on the historical narratives embedded in each piece of art, and be open to the crucial dialogue woven through the works.

“While Thou Shalt Not may feel confronting for some, we encourage the conversations that will come from the works.” She continues, “They highlight New Zealand’s historical colonial narratives and are jarring reminders of the lasting impact for Tangata Whenua. Seeing them within a gallery context gives an opportunity for them to be viewed through an alternative lens.”

Mr Iti has been involved in the development of this exhibition and has overseen the daily progress within the gallery space. There will be opportunities for the public to catch Tame in action in the gallery studio space during one of his pop-in impromptu painting sessions.

Thou Shalt Not opens this Thursday, 7 December and runs until Saturday, 27 January 2024 at Te Kōputu a te Whanga a Toi, 49 Kākāhoroa Drive, Whakatāne.
