Nominations slow for Whakatāne District Council By-election for the Galatea-Waiohau Subdivision of the Murupara Community Board

With less than one week before nominations close for the by-election for two members of the Galatea-Waiohau Subdivision of the Murupara Community Board, candidates are proving slow to put their names forward.

On Monday 16 December, no nominations have been received for the two vacancies.

Candidates have until 12 noon on Monday 23 December 2019 to get their nominations in.

The need for the by-election arose following the lack of nominations received for the Galatea-Waiohau Subdivision of the Murupara Community Board at the recent local authority triennial elections. As extraordinary vacancies have occurred, a by-election is now being held to fill the vacancies.

To be eligible for nomination, a candidate must be enrolled as a Parliamentary elector and a New Zealand citizen.

Nomination papers are available during normal business hours from:

Nominations of candidates must be in the hands of the electoral officer or an electoral official, no later than 12 noon on Monday 23 December 2019 at the Whakatāne or Murupara Council offices.

Should there be more than two candidates, voting documents will be mailed to electors in the Galatea-Waiohau Subdivision of the Murupara Community Board from Monday 27 January 2020, for return by 12 noon on Tuesday 18 February 2020. Preliminary results will be available that afternoon.
