Notice of election, nomination of candidates and closing date for nominations for the 2022 elections of Whakatāne District Council

Under sections 52 and 53 of the Local Electoral Act 2001, I give notice that on Saturday 8 October 2022 the following elections will be held by postal vote using the First Past the Post electoral system:

Mayor

  • Election of Mayor (elected ‘at large’)

Wards

  • Election of two councillors for the Rangitāiki General Ward
  • Election of four councillors for the Whakatāne-Ōhope General Ward
  • Election of one councillor for the Te Urewera General Ward
  • Election of one councillor for the Rangitāiki Māori Ward
  • Election of one councillor for the Kapu te rangi Māori Ward
  • Election of one councillor for the Toi ki Uta Māori Ward

Community Boards

  • Election of six members for the Murupara Community Board, made up of:
    • Election of two members for the Galatea-Waiōhau Subdivision
    • Election of three members for the Murupara Subdivision
    • Election of one member for the Te Urewera Subdivision
  • Election of six members for the Rangitāiki Community Board
  • Election of six members for the Tāneatua Community Board
  • Election of six members for the Whakatāne-Ōhope Community Board

Candidate names will be listed in random order on the voting documents.

Nominations

Each candidate must be nominated on the appropriate nomination paper obtainable during normal business hours from Friday 15 July 2022 at:

  • Temporary Customer Service Centre
    Whakatāne District Council, 4 Commerce Street, Whakatāne
  • Murupara Service Centre & Library
    Civic Square, Pine Drive, Murupara
  • www.whakatane.govt.nz
  • Phoning the electoral office on 0800 922 822.

Nominations of candidates must be in the hands of the electoral officer or an electoral official no later than midday on Friday 12 August 2022.

Each nomination must be accompanied by a deposit of $200 GST inclusive (payable by bank transfer, EFTPOS or cash).

A candidate may submit a candidate profile statement with their nomination paper. The candidate profile statement will then be included with the voting documents and sent out to electors. An attachment to the nomination paper outlines rules and procedures governing candidate profile statements.

Electoral Roll

The electoral roll to be used for this election closes on Friday 12 August 2022, and can be inspected during normal business hours from Friday 15 July 2022 at the following locations:

    Whakatāne District Council, 4 Commerce Street, Whakatāne
  • Murupara Service Centre & Library
    Civic Square, Pine Drive, Murupara

Enrolment for inclusion on the Residents Electoral Roll is conducted through the Electoral Commission.

Applications for enrolment should be made through:

  • www.vote.nz
  • Phoning 0800 36 76 56
  • Your local postal agency.

Enrolment for inclusion on the Ratepayers Electoral Roll is conducted through the electoral office of Whakatāne District Council.

Applications for enrolment should be made on the prescribed form available at the above locations, www.whakatane.govt.nz or by phoning 0800 922 822.

Following closure of the roll, the electoral officer may, on application of any person who is or claims to be entitled to be enrolled or any other person or otherwise, make any necessary corrections to the names, addresses, abbreviations, or marks appearing in the electoral roll.
