Relationships and place explored in new triple-exhibition

The finishing touches have been perfected and the corridors transformed for a new triple-gallery exhibition, opening this weekend at Te Kōputu a te Whanga a Toi.

While an all-galleries changeover is quite the process, Curator Israel Randell says it’s a small price to pay in bringing three diverse shows together with one common theme.

Of the soon to be opened exhibition, Israel says, “We’ve placed these three shows together purposefully.”

“While all uniquely different and featuring art forms from textiles and sculptures to paintings and kākahu (garments), when brought together, ‘Waitangi’, ‘From Where I Stand’ and ‘Whakatau Mirimiri’ collectively cultivate conversation about relationships and place.”

Israel adds, “In Waitangi, an all-Māori group exhibition, we see historical references of how Māori lost their whenua (land) and the subsequent effects of this. It features works that respond to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and critiques the contrasts and dualities this document has created.”

“From Where I Stand is an exhibition by a local collective of local fibre artists who each respond to notions of home through textiles.”

“Adjoining these two shows, Whakatau Miromiro is a solo exhibition by Terri Te Tau which decodes whakataukī (proverbs) and how they might be applied to our relationships with animals.”

Members of the public are invited to attend the triple-gallery opening at 11am on Saturday, 13th August at Te Kōputu a te Whanga a Toi. The exhibition runs until Sunday, 16th October 2022.
