Whakatāne District Council and Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa advise that the roads between Pohaturoa (Commerce Street/The Strand/Canning Place intersection) and the Whakatāne Heads will be closed between 3am - 5am on Saturday, 3 December for the purpose of a dedication and cultural prayer initiated by Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa for Mataatua iwi.

Due to the nature of the cultural dedication, it will be held in the hours of darkness and streetlighting on those roads noted above will be turned off during this time. Roads will reopen as the procession moves through.

Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa kindly ask that people respect the cultural significance of this event and do not spectate.
