Wastewater overflow triggers temporary health warning

A wastewater overflow on the corner of Pounama Place and Apanui Avenue has potentially contaminated the Whakatāne River.

Due to the heavy rain today, wastewater from a manhole has entered the stormwater network and, through the McAlister Street Stormwater Station, has flowed into the river.

People are advised not to swim, fish or gather shellfish until the temporary health warning has been lifted.

Whakatāne District Council has placed signs in the affected area and will be testing the river water.
